EverCade VS im test: Compact retrochons
The first thing that stands out when opening the carton is how incredibly compact is the OVERCAME VS from Blaze: the device is just 20 centimeters wide and 13 deep. The white box has a pleasantly simple design and fits unobtrusive among the TVs.
But hold, what is the OVERCAME VS at all? Another miniconeone with built-in retro games, which you already know in and memorize? No, the OVERCAME VS pursues a different thought than the numerous Gimmickonsonen of Nintendo or Sega.
OVERCAME VS — Price and Release:
Manufacturer: Blaze Price: 130 Euro Release appointment: 14.1.2022
OVERCAME VS — Scope of delivery:
The OVERCAME VS is available in two versions, with only the scope of delivery: In the premium pack for 130 euros, you get two modules (Data East Arcade 1 and Techno Arcade 1) as well as two controllers, while the normal version for 100 euros only one module (Techno Arcade 1) and contains a controller. Both versions also contain a USB cable for the power connection. A corresponding socket adapter and an HDMI cable you have to be ready for yourself.
Originally, Overcame was not a television console, but was launched by Manufacturer Blaze 2020 as a handheld. Play thrust came in the form of modules with small game collections that did not limit themselves to a system, but across the bank through various game consoles and arcade machines.
Thematically, the collections are based on manufacturers such as The Bitmap Brothers whose speedball title as well as The Chaos Engine and Xenon 2 are summarized on a Cartridge. All published OVERCAME modules are compatible with the new OVERCAME VS and playable on the TV. You can even use the handheld with a special cable as a controller on the VS.
Simpler connection
If you have the OVERCAME VS connected via USB cable with a power source and via HDMI with the TV (included only a USB cable included), a pressure on the POWER button will awaken the console to life. We like the chic light bar, which extends over the front of the device and can light up in several colors. Our test device first demanded the setting of the system language, next to English is also found in the long list of supported languages.
Subsequently, we made ourselves the choice to integrate the OVERCAME VS into the Wi-Fi or not. But we are naturally curious and of course agreed. A good decision, because Blaze has already provided a software update for the console that was downloaded. But you are dependent on Wi-Fi, because there is no connection for network cables.
The simple console discloses two module slots under a Leslie flap. Yes, read correctly: two. So you can plug in two cartridges and access the contained titles in the main menu. Anyone who bought the premium pack can sink as well as both supplied modules in the console. The modules can even change on the fly while the console is running. The operating system immediately responds and lists the changed titles directly in the menu. Cool!
Comfort functions and controller
The OVERCAME VS gives you numerous setting options on the hand. For example, you can stretch the 1080p image, display in original format or Pixel Perfect. Also, scan lines for the true tube monitor feeling are in several gradations to the repertoire of the console. The settings can also be changed when playing is running. If you realize that Pixel Perfect you do not like, you can not press the menu button and get into an in-game menu with not all, but the most important setting options. In addition, you can also save your current game level here or save States.
The well-handed controllers of the OVERCAME VS are reminiscent of Nintendo's classic NEW controllers, but have more buttons. In addition to the digital control cross and the four Face buttons, there is on the front, Select and menu. In addition, the controllers have four shoulder buttons, which is important for example of PlayStation titles. You can connect up to four of these controllers, with the range of games that support four players at the same time is still a bit lean.
OVERCAME VS does what she should
For our test, we only had the two enclosed modules Techno Arcade 1 and Data East Arcade 1, which are limited to classic machine games. How well Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, PlayStation and Co. are emulated, so we can not judge.
The contained games like Burger Time, Double Dragon 2, Sly Spy, Bad Dudes, Combative and how they all were all called very clean. For these automatic games, the SELECT key serves as a virtual coin finish, so you can easily invest hundreds of virtual D-Mark pieces if you are cutting the spoon over and over again until the credits run over the screen.
Especially in connection with machine games, however, we miss in the collections a way to manipulate the DIP switches to set difficulty, number of lives and similar options. But that is an arcade-specific criticism, which of course only applies to some available game collections. Incidentally, the sheaths of the modules are numbered, whereby the hunter and collector shoot is to be awakened. But ultimately, of course it is left to you whether you want to have a continuous OVERCAME collection on the shelf or just pick up the raisins.
Pro Contra :
\ + Compact design \ + good controller \ + successful system menu \ + many settings \ + Comfort functions \ + four controller ports
\ Gaming not for anyone No LAN connection
Conclusion : The OVERCAME VS is a good hardware whose game selection itself is more fictitious for retro ratios.
